I offer support to businesses including business start-ups, in Barnsley, Wakefield, Leeds, Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, and other areas of South and West Yorkshire. Remote services can also be offered for other locations.

About me

I am Kat Derbyshire, the owner and HR Consultant at Black Kat HR based in Barnsley. I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Professional Development (CIPD) and the Barnsley Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.

I have worked in HR for a number of years at a senior level in Contact Centres, Manufacturing, Food and Logistics environments. I offer support either at your business premises or remotely to suit your needs. I am passionate about supporting local businesses to grow and develop as a result of the great people they employ.

    Contracts of employment / Staff handbooks

    I can help you review and update existing policies and procedures you have in place to ensure they are current and reflective of the way you operate as a business.     Once you have recruited new employees it is vital they have a good experience joining your organisation reinforcing that they have made the right choice to work for you.

    I can support you in evaluating how you onboard and induct new starters to give you the best chance of retaining your employees for the long term through considered communications pre-start date, how the business communicates news of a new starter to other colleagues and also providing an effective induction.

    Absence Management

    Sickness absence from work, whether long or short term, can cause a real headache for businesses large and small. I can help you manage absence within your business effectively to keep disruption and costs to a minimum. I can support you with the following:

    • Ensuring that you have an effective absence policy and processes in place which are effective for both the business and its employees which meet with requirements of the law.
    • Putting in place a robust return to work process
    • Supporting managers in how to handle absences fairly and consistently.
    • How to work with reasonable adjustments such as phased return to work and workplace adaptations can be used.

    Investigations, Disciplinaries and Grievances

    Investigations, Disciplinaries and Grievances are areas that managers often find difficult to handle. I can provide advice and support to help you achieve the best outcomes with minimal risk working in the requirements of employment Law and best practice methods.

    I can assist you with Disciplinary and Grievance matters on a case by case basis and provide support to line managers through coaching and by providing 121 or group sessions around handling these matters confidently where required.


    Mediation is a method of resolving disputes between colleagues in the workplace which involves an independent mediator helping 2 or more employees reach a solution to an issue which is acceptable to all parties. Mediation can be a great way to address issues when the people involved want to reach a solution and can be a very effective method of addressing an issue that has the potential to become a grievance before it reaches that point.

    Appraisals and Reviews

    Do you currently have a review process in place? Does it generate meaningful conversations with your employees that result in high levels of productivity and leave your people both clear on what is needed from them but also makes them feel valued by your business?
